Chapter 12
The house was silent now.
Carver was asleep up in their bed, but despite what David would call a physically active day, he couldn't sleep. His mind was too restless to let him relax.
So, he wandered the house, trying to ignore the ghosts of memory in every corner.
Robin was more present in David's thoughts than he had been in years. David found himself upset more by that than what he'd done with Chris. The past was past, but... God, it had been good to revisit that part of himself again.
It had already started waning by the time Robin had died. Despite the control he'd had over David, he had respected David's drive to succeed and the restrictions it put on their activities. But even then, David had missed it a little. There were still the occasional, very discreet parties, but they had never quite been the same. Then, when Robin died, David had locked the dungeon, put away all the pictures and pretended that part of his life had never happened.
He loved Carver, but it was hard for David to explain his history to him. Carver's virulent antipathy to Robin didn't help things. David understood where it came from, and now that he was older and a little more experienced, perhaps even agreed with some of it. But Carver hadn't been there, couldn't understand how the parties and group fucks and everything else had been a sign of being protected, even when it seemed the complete opposite.
Unsurprisingly, David found himself standing outside the still-locked door to the dungeon, idly tossing the key in his hand.
This was stupid. It was just a room. A long-empty room.
He shoved the key in the padlock, turning it with a resistant snap that popped the shackle from the body. He pulled it out, flipped the plate open and hung the lock back in the loop so it would be easy to find later.
In all the S&M stereotypes, the room should have been black and dank. But it wasn't. Robin had insisted on a clean, white room, not sterile enough for surgery, but not dark enough for shame.
Even after all these years, David was struck by the sense of utter calm the room gave him. In Robin's dungeon, there was no room for fear or hesitation. Walking through the door, you left the world behind.
There was a thin layer of dust over everything. David had kept the studio tidy, but hadn't come into this room in years. He traced a finger through the coating on the chest that served as storage and bondage table. Robin would be disappointed.
If he weren't dead.
Now David was getting morbid.
This was all his now, left to him by Robin to do with what he wanted. He should clear it all out and make an office for Carver. There was no reason to keep it. The games he and Carver played didn't require such extravagant setups.
But somehow it wasn't that easy.
Every piece in the room was of the highest quality, finely tooled leather and polished hardwood.
